Wild boar
Sus scrofa · Suidae
LC — Least concern
It is the wild boar, a sturdy animal covered in coarse, greyish-brown fur. Adult males have tusks — canine teeth that protrude from the mouth. The young, which are light-striped, are called ‘rajados’.
It lives in groups and is mainly nocturnal. It roots around in the ground with its snout in search of roots, acorns and earthworms, leaving easily recognisable patches of churned-up earth along the trails. Its range is expanding throughout the country.
Habitat
Woodlands, dense thickets and farmland, where it finds shelter and food.
