Churra Galega Bragançana sheep

Ovis aries (Churra Galega Bragançana) · Bovidae

It is a native sheep breed from the north-east, with long, coarse wool (churra) and a wool-free face, often with dark patches around the eyes. Hardy, it copes well with the cold and the poor pastures of the plateau.

It provides milk, meat and wool, and moves in flocks across the marshes and common land, guided by the shepherd. The region’s lamb has Protected Geographical Indication status, and these flocks help to keep the open mountain landscape alive.

Habitat

Meadows, wasteland and pastures in the north-east of Trás-os-Montes.
