Domestic animal (Portuguese breed) Endemic
Mirandese Donkey
Equus asinus (raça Mirandesa) · Equidae
It is the native breed of donkey from the Mirandese plateau, with a long, dark brown coat and a sturdy build. Its thick coat protects it from the harsh winters of the north-east.
For generations, it was the working animal used for farming and transport in the Terra de Miranda. It almost disappeared with the advent of mechanisation, but conservation programmes have revived the breed, which is now linked to rural tourism and the preservation of the region’s heritage.
Habitat
The Mirandese Plateau and the villages of north-eastern Trás-os-Montes.
