Montesinho Black Goat
Capra hircus (raça montesinho · Bovidae
It is the native dark-coated goat breed of the northern mountains — the black mountain goat. It has long hair and large, curved horns, and is reared in a very extensive, almost wild manner on the most rugged slopes.
It is well adapted to the cold and to dense scrubland, which it helps to control, thereby reducing the risk of fire. It is reared mainly for its meat, in small herds, and represents a genetic heritage linked to the Trás-os-Montes mountains.
Habitat
Rugged hillsides and mountain scrubland of the northern interior.
