Mirandese Cow
Bos taurus (raça Mirandesa) · Bovidae
It is a native breed of cattle from the north-east of Trás-os-Montes, with a brown coat and lyre-shaped horns. Robust and docile, it is well adapted to the cold of the plateau and the rugged mountain terrain.
For centuries it has been used for labour, meat and milk, and even today it grazes extensively on the marshes. Its meat has a Protected Designation of Origin (Carne Mirandesa), and the breed is a living part of the identity and landscape of the Terra de Miranda.
Habitat
Meadows and mountain pastures of the Mirandese plateau and north-eastern Trás-os-Montes.
